I recently lost my second Xbox 360 to the RROD. Unfortunately, MS would not replace it because it was no longer covered under warranty. I decided to replace it with this bundle mainly because I wanted the larger hard drive. I also wanted two of the new controllers with the "improved" d-pads. Of course, I also wanted MW3 so this bundle made a lot of sense.

These new slim models are supposed to have a better thermal design and be more reliable. Given my experiences with the RROD, I'll believe this when I have a 360 that lasts more than 1.5 years without repair. The new system does appear to vent heat better than the old ones. There's a massive fan above the processor that vents heat through a large opening in the case.

Regarding the new controllers: The new d-pad does not completely solve the issues that the old controllers had. It does improve input, but only slightly. The raised configuration provides a little more tactile feedback to the user so that they hit the up/down/left/right directions more consistently. Unfortunately, you can still accidentally input directions that are 90 degrees off in the heat of battle.

The MW3 branding is nice IMO. It's subtle and not too obnoxious. The sound effects the system makes are a nice touch, but sound a little tinny and grainy.

Amazon customer service is amazing. I had an issue with one of the controllers and they went above and beyond to resolve the issue. This is the second time they've really impressed me. Thank you Amazon.

By the way, it is a hair you see in the video and not a crack on the case. I didn't notice it until after I already made the video. As I said in the video the only way I can see people getting cracks in the case is either from it being dropped in shipping or possibly in the warehouse. I don't see anything in the contruction that would lead me to believe it is a design flaw.

When I bought this Amazon was sold out so I bought it at a local store (BB) which meant I had to pay sales tax on it. ($24.50) They did give me a $20 gift card so that made up for having to pay sales tax. If you're in a state that has to pay sales tax regardless I would probably just buy it local and try to rule out possible shipping defects. These are selling out fast. It is possible they may go on sale for Black Friday but typically Black Friday deals rarely include anything super popular and expensive. When you consider the XBox 360 is now a 7 year old system and a new one is coming the rate at which these are selling is pretty astonishing. (I talked with some store sales reps)

I can't say this is a smart buy for everyone, but I will say that I would like to see theme based consoles of this quality earlier in the lifecycle. I'm surprised they still don't offer an HDMI cable in their package. They know people want it because they don't even offer Component Cables (RBG) anymore so they just give you a cheap Composite Cable. In addition to those small complaints the only other thing I can pick on is the fact they interrupted the logo on the front of the console for the USB Input Door. They should have continued the paint pattern on the door as well. You can tell the doors are produced elsewhere and then assembled in one place. It's not horrible but it does ruin the overall consistency the rest of the console has, which is sleek.

Under the Hood
Xbox 360 is much smaller than its predecessor--it measures approximately 3.3 by 12.2 by 10.2 inches and weighs 7.7 lbs. It's powered by custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU with three symmetrical cores each running at 3.2 GHz. A checklist that should tell you exactly why you want this.

-This is a Microsoft refurbished console. That means it will be in 360 packaging with resealed cords, controllers, and headset (I'm tempted to say that my headset was brand new, and maybe even my cords, but I don't want to claim that without knowing. Regardless. There is something nice about not opening a clamshell sealed 360 that smells like lung cancer.) The condition is pristine. NO dirt or smudges. One sticker on the bottom that says refurbished. Mine left a bit of sticky when I took it off. Nail polish remover will get it off without pain if you are worried about that.

-It will come with the new power-brick that is vented, it also has the new Jasper chip. This means: Even though you are getting a refurbished console, it is technically more sound than a brand new 20 gig from Microsoft's original batches. Rest easy my friend. This console was not made to break. It's like it got a tune up. These two features paired together will fight overheating and RED RING OF DEATH.

-It does have HD

-Mine came with 2 controllers, which at the time wasn't advertised (so it was a nice surprise). Cross your fingers about that if it's not openly included.

-If you don't already know, because it has a hard drive you will be able to connect to Xboxlive out of the box, though for online play I would recommend buying a 12 month live subscription. You can easily find them online for 35ish dollars. If you pay more you didn't look hard enough. :)

I bought this black wireless controller so I could have another wireless controller. Be advised when reading reviews on this product that it appears some people are reviewing the Xbox 360 Silver Controller and Play & Charge Kit, which is a special controller that is different (and more expensive as of this writing) than the black controller I am reviewing. This controller does NOT have any chrome items on it (other than the usual Xbox Guide button), nor does it have any upgrades to the D-pad.

As far as the controller itself, I didn't notice any structural difference between this controller and my old white controller that came with my Pro 20GB Xbox 360 several years ago. I did notice, however, that this controller properly charges my Play & Charge Kit where my old one did not. Prior to buying this controller, my Play & Charge kit would always show the red light while recharging. Since the recharging appeared to work anyway, I didn't think much of it (especially after calling Microsoft and being informed that the warranty on accessories is only 90 days, though that was in 2008). Since I assumed that the battery was at fault the whole time, I was surprised to find out that this controller charged the battery and (correctly) showed a green light when charging was complete.

Though it did not appear to be a structural change to the controller, I had somewhat forgotten (or not realized?) how much wear my controller has taken over the four years (give or take) since I got my console. The new controller gives me a bit more precision in games, especially with the right stick and the pushing of the sticks (for activities like sprinting)

A Side note: I wont be re-hashing the many many reviews that you can find on the Current Gen Xbox 360 Hardware, as there are plenty of those out there for you to make a decision.

The Annual Holiday bundles are an amazing value. For the same price as the same spec system (amount of memory, Kinect included or not) you get the same system with 2 games. This year, for the 250GB model, they are including a Voucher to Download Skyrim. Important to know and keep in mind if your internet is slow, limited, etc. It also includes Forza 4 Essential Edition. I am not much of a racing game player, so I am not sure if that is what the normal version of the game is called, or if that is a special, some what limited version of the game. You also get the 1 month of Xbox live Gold, 1 wireless controller, and 1 wired headset. It does NOT include an HDMI cable, but instead comes with a set of Composite cables. Some thing to keep in mind, and if you need cables, buy from Amazon AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable (3 Feet/0.9 Meter) - Supports Ethernet, 3D, and Audio Return [Newest Standard], or at least online. Any brick and mortar store will cost far more for a cable.

The takeaway is this, if you are looking to get a Xbox anyway, and are even slightly interested in either or both of these games, there is no reason not to get the bundle.
